Welcome to a collection of resources to assist you in preparing your presentation for the Emerging Presenters Showcase. Whether you're sharing groundbreaking research, new technologies, case studies or clinical insights, these tips will guide you in delivering a presentation that inspires and empowers. If you're presenting your work for the first time or looking to refine your skills, these resources will help you captivate your audience and leave a lasting impression.
The appearance of your presentation plays a huge role in engaging your audience. To make sure your presentation is on point, keep the following in mind.
Use a consistent referencing style, background color, text size and color, and font throughout your presentation to improve flow.
Speak clearly, at a steady pace, and engage with your audience.
Use PowerPoint's Accessibility Checker. This tool identifies accessibility issues and suggests improvements, like ensuring adequate contrast.
Keep your slides concise without excessive words. Keep custom animations and slide transitions simple and use them sparingly. Include your video in a 'picture-in-picture' format making sure it does not cover content on the screen.
To refine your presentation skills, a vital step is reviewing your delivery from multiple angles.
Here are three essential techniques to help you audit and improve:
Turn the sound all the way up and listen without looking at the screen. By solely focusing on the auditory component of your presentation, you can better evaluate your tone, pace, and overall vocal quality.
What do I like about my voice? What don't I like?
Are there areas where I could speak more clearly or confidently?
Turn the sound off and watch the video of your presentation. This allows you to focus entirely on your body language, facial expressions, and overall physical presence.
How is my posture?
Are my gestures natural and supportive of my message?
What do my facial expressions communicate?
Do I look engaged and approachable?
Transcribe your video word for word. Make sure to include any "umms" or "ahhs". This allows you to identify filler words and other habits that might interrupt the flow of your delivery.
How many filler words do I use?
Are there words I overuse?
What can I replace these with to sound more confident and deliberate?
