Illuminating the liver: From nodules to neoplasms CEUS in action

11:20 AM - 11:40 AM

Presentation Synopsis / Abstract

Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) has been of great use world-wide however has not been widely adapted into sonographic practice in Australia as of yet. The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) has been using CEUS for a range of organs and pathologies for the past 4 years and great results.

CEUS gives real time dynamic imaging, it is used for diagnostic accuracy and problem solving CT and MRI.

Benefits of CEUS include no nephrotoxicity, radiation free and the portability of ultrasound. CEUS empowers sonographers allowing ultrasound to go from a modality that is a pathology filter to a modality that gives diagnostic certainty.

Learn about the RAH's CEUS journey, learn about how to do it, when to do it and witness a range of interesting cases of pathologies encountered in clinical practice. Hopefully this will inspire the use of CEUS in your clinical practice in the future.

Biography

Mr Matthew Le | South Australia Medical Imaging Matthew is the Head Sonographer of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the largest tertiary hospital in South Australia. During his time there, he has implemented many new techniques into standard practice. These include Shearwave Elastography, Liver Fat Quantification, Transcranial Doppler for Vasospasm and Patent Foramen Ovale assessment, Intestinal ultrasound and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound. He is a passionate sonographer and takes joy in sonographer professional development and growth of the profession as a whole. He was also awarded the ASA Sonographer of the Year for South Australia in 2025.

Portal hypertension; Doppler clues and collateral pathways

12:10 PM - 12:30 PM

Presentation Synopsis / Abstract

Assessing the main portal vein is routine in abdominal ultrasound, but a deeper grasp of Doppler principles and portal venous anatomy allows us to extract far richer diagnostic insight. This session explores how subtle Doppler clues can reveal normal and abnormal venous and arterial patterns in patients with portal hypertension. We’ll also revisit the anatomy of the portal and systemic venous systems to understand how collateral pathways develop—and how recognising them can elevate the clinical value of our studies. By expanding our Doppler toolkit, we can provide more meaningful information to referrers and ultimately enhance patient care.

Optimising ultrasound for hepatic steatosis: Grading criteria and diagnostic traps

12:30 PM - 12:50 PM

Presentation Synopsis / Abstract

With the rising global burden of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), accurate assessment of hepatic steatosis is increasingly important for detection, guiding clinical management, and monitoring therapeutic response. Ultrasound plays a central role in this pathway. However, traditional B-mode grading is inherently subjective, and quantitative approaches, while increasingly available, require optimisation, standardisation, and informed interpretation.

This session will briefly review key B-mode considerations before focusing on the optimisation and interpretation of emerging quantitative techniques. Attenuation-based, backscatter and combined methods will be addressed, with an emphasis on technique, reproducibility and common pitfalls. Vendor-specific outputs will be discussed in the context of current consensus recommendations, alongside practical strategies to improve consistency and confidence in everyday clinical practice.

Biography

Mrs Heather Allen | QUT/Queensland Health Heather is a lecturer in the medical ultrasound program at Queensland University of Technology and a senior radiographer/sonographer with Queensland Health. With a strong commitment to learning and teaching, she values contributing to sonographer education and bridging research with everyday clinical practice.
