Tiny echoes: ultrasound of the vocal cords **NEW VOICE**

9:30 AM - 10:15 AM

Presentation Synopsis / Abstract

Vocal cord palsy is a relatively common complication following paediatric cardiac surgery and can lead to feeding difficulties, respiratory issues, and prolonged hospital stays if not detected early. While flexible nasolaryngoscopy remains the gold standard, it is invasive and poorly tolerated in neonates and infants. This session highlights how ultrasound provides a safe, non-invasive, and reliable alternative for assessing vocal cord structure and dynamic function in vulnerable paediatric populations.

This workshop aims to build practical awareness and confidence in performing paediatric vocal cord ultrasound. It will cover scanning techniques, sonographic appearance of key anatomy, and assessment strategies focusing on vocal cord symmetry and mobility. Attendees will gain practical insights and confidence in this emerging area, helping support earlier recognition and more patient-centred care for children at risk of vocal cord palsy.
