Fundamentals of pelvic ultrasound

1:30 PM - 2:20 PM

Abstract

Gynaecological complaints are common in the clinical setting, and can be the result of many causes, such as fibroids, adnexal masses, ovarian cysts, ovarian torsion to only mention a few.

Ultrasound is usually the first imaging study requested in these patients, and is the ideal imaging modality.

This workshop will walk you through the fundamental steps of a pelvic ultrasound, including the following:
- interpreting the request form
- the importance of patient communication prior to even picking up the probe
- the relevant questions to ask
- gaining informed consent
- the importance of the transabdominal scan - the forgotten skill
-steps to performing the transvaginal study
- the importance of the bi-manual exam
- the mentrual cycle
- machine set up and image optimisation
- describing your findings
- discussion of some common pathologies
- how to assess the axial uterus
- tips and tricks

Please note - this will not be an endometriosis workshop, there are other workshops for those interested in that.
