The painful penis
9:40 AM - 10:00 AMAbstract
Acute penile pathology can not only be confronting for the patient, but also for the sonographer not frequently exposed to acute penile emergencies. In order to confidently contribute to a diagnosis, the sonographer must have an inherent knowledge of the complexities of penile anatomy- namely its facial structure and extensive vascular networks, with dysfunction of either forming the basis of many acute penile diseases. When combined with an understanding of pathophysiological processes, the sonographer can play a pivotal role in influencing management strategies and contribute to achieving favorable patient outcomes. The Painful Penis is a presentation that serves as an educational tool and suggested guideline in the evaluation of acute penile presentations with ultrasound. It outlines the basic intrinsic requirements relative to B-Mode and Doppler assessment of the penis, optimal scanning techniques and covers the sonographic anatomy of acute penile pathologies encountered in the clinical setting.
Biography
Miss Donna Napier FASA |
Tweed Valley Hospital
Donna Napier is a Radiographer/Sonographer and the acting Sonography Section Manager at the Tweed Valley Hospital in Northern New South Wales, having over 24 years industry experience. She holds a master’s degree in medical sonography and is a Fellow of the Australasian Sonographers association (FASA). Donna has a passion for education and is an advocate for expanding the sonographer’s scope of practice. She has a keen interest in musculoskeletal and emergency ultrasound applications, and more recently has developed a passion for the use of ultrasound to improve men’s health outcomes.
Her contributions to the profession are vast, having presented at several national conferences and authored multiple publications in Sonography journal. In 2024 she was proud to partake in multiple outreach initiatives, presenting globally on ocular ultrasound to health professionals in emerging nations for the Radiology Across Borders VITAL conference, as well as travelling to Alice Springs as a part of the RAB UNITY initiative – a collaboration aimed at improving medical ultrasound access and healthcare for First Nation’s people.
Due to her work in improving ultrasound education and services in regional areas, Donna was announced as the winner of the Allied Health Rural and Remote Excellence category at the national Allied Health Awards in October 2024. She complimented this award by being named the Allied Health Professional of the Year as well as the Allied Health Educator of the Year (2024, 2023) for the Northern NSW Local Health District within the same month. In 2019 Donna was the recipient of both the Queensland Sonographer of the Year and Educator of the Year awards at the ASA Awards of Excellence. She will be presenting on ‘The Painful Penis’ - serving as a guide to the sonographic evaluation of acute penile injuries commonly encountered in the clinical setting.

Testicular compartment syndrome
10:00 AM - 10:10 AMAbstract
TCS refers to the impairment of circulation in the testis due to either increased venous resistance or extraluminal compression. Diagnosis is time critical as delay leads to testicular hypoxia and often subsequent loss.
The literature lists a variety of causes including varicocele, hydrocele, orchitis, cryptorchidism, and scrotal hernia. A chief shortcoming of ultrasound is late TCS detection, well after it has impaired testicular flow. Intraoperatively, TCS is diagnosed by the dull purple appearance of a hypoxic testicle and by tissue pressures above 30 mmHg. When compartment pressure is low, the underlying etiology must be promptly treated. Because testicular oxidant stress is common in infertility and can be caused by TCS, TCS may be a larger factor in infertility than currently suspected.
This talk discusses the role of US and expected temporal changes seen with TCS.

The prostate
10:10 AM - 10:20 AMAbstract
The prostate is generally the forgotten subject of a male renal tract ultrasound.
Prostate cancer in 2024 the most commonly cancer diagnosed for MALEs, and will account for ~ 28% of all diagnosed cancers for males.
5 year survival rates are variable depending on the type of cancer diagnosed, adenocarcinomas 98% while neuroendocrine neoplasms at ~ 9.9%.
The role of ultrasound is not to determine the type of prostate cancer, but to document structural changes of an enlarging prostate and in the guidance of prostate biopsies.
This presentation will cover
The anatomy of the prostate and surrounding structures.
Pathologies associated with the prostate.
