Nerves of the lower limb - knee to foot
Abstract
Peripheral nerves of the lower leg can become injured, entrapped or involve pathology. Ultrasound imaging can be used to visualise the neural structure, diagnose neural changes and guide nerve blocks and hydrodissection. This workshop will unpack the relative anatomy of nerves of the lower limb (from the knee and inferiorly), demonstrate the sonographic technique to image them, and highlight common points of neural entrapment or injury. The nerves covered will include the deep and superficial peroneal nerves and their distal branches, sural nerve, saphenous nerve, tibial nerve, and its distal branches (medial and lateral plantar nerves), medial calcaneal nerve, Baxter’s nerve, as well as common plantar digital and proper nerves.
