Problem solving with CEUS
11:30 AM - 11:50 AMAbstract
Ultrasound is often the preferred first imaging technique for our patients because of its many distinct advantages. However, there are limitations that often require findings to undergo further investigation, sometimes at greater risk or discomfort to the patient. Additional imaging such as CT, MRI, or even invasive procedures, can still fall short of diagnostic certainty. Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) involves the addition of microbubble contrast agents to the traditional ultrasound exam. CEUS has unique properties that enhance diagnostic accuracy while being safe and minimally invasive. This presentation will explore these properties, and how CEUS can contribute to both improved patient experience and outcomes.

Beyond McBurney's point: a guide to bowel in the RLQ
12:10 PM - 12:30 PMAbstract
The right lower quadrant is a pathological hot spot for the gastrointestinal tract and other organ systems. While ultrasound offers a repeatable, non-invasive method to assess this area, attempting to locate the appendix is often the extent of our involvement with the intestines. This presentation will review the different types of bowel that can be found in the right lower quadrant, and practical strategies for differentiating them. We will cover appropriate machine settings, probe choice and techniques for adapting to common anatomical variations. Different pathologies and their sonographic signs will also be discussed.

Renal UTIs
12:30 PM - 12:40 PMAbstract
“Recurrent UTI’s ? structural cause” is a common dreaded ultrasound request.
Ultrasound plays an integral role not only in assessing anatomical causes of urinary tract infections (UTIs) but also in diagnosing associated serious complications. A variety of factors can predispose individuals to infections, and ultrasound can help identify these underlying issues. This presentation will also address several common and rarer complications that can be identified with ultrasound and will include how we can utilise contrast-enhanced ultrasound in assessing some of these complications.

Hepatic abcesses
12:40 AM - 12:50 PMAbstract
The diagnosis of liver abscesses continues to be a serious clinical problem due to significant associated morbidity and mortality rates. The basic requirements for effective therapy of liver abscesses are early diagnosis and potential drainage. The early stages of liver abscess can be subtle, non-specific and often mimic other liver lesions. This presentation will cover the varied sonographic appearances at evolving stages of disease process including imaging pitfalls in a teaching hospital setting.

I have been a qualified sonographer for over 10 years beginning my career in the North East of England working for the NHS. In 2016 I emigrated to Australia and began at Fiona Stanley Hospital where I currently work as Clinical Tutor. I thoroughly enjoy working in the public system and the variety in work load and cases this provides. My interests lie in obstetrics, particularly maternal fetal medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology and general abdominal scanning in the acute setting.
